Right Graphic Designer Education

Graphic Design is the practical step-child in the family of Fine Arts. Sculpture, Painting and even Architecture are often considered to be purer, more ethereal and refined. Yet Graphic Design is where imagination, creativity and technology all come together in the communication of ideas. Graphic designers work for real-world clients to hear their vision and from this create a visual message geared to a specific audience. A designer’s primary work tools are type and images and using these items are qualifications needed for a graphic designer.

While it is a given that those considering the graphic design field need to have an artist's eye and natural talent and skill in the area of expressing concepts in a visual fashion, there are a number of other qualifications needed for graphic designer. Perhaps the most important is innate curiosity.

As a whole, those who select this field are wildly interested in the world around them and often view it from a slightly different perspective than many others do. Their curiosity prompts them to question everything and they can also be a bit on the rebellious side during their formative years. Because they are so visually focused it is also true that graphic designers can be hyper-critical of objects, ideas and images that they view as less than imaginative or too commonplace. They often are connoisseurs of the obscure, alternative music, performance art and fascination with the look of fonts and typefaces are common to many in this field.

Familiarity and the ability to work with large variety of media are qualifications needed for graphic designer. While technology certain is a large part of the design field today, the aspiring designer needs to be able to draw, photograph and paint to some extent as well as understand the basics in each of these areas. A large subset of the graphic design world is in the development of typefaces and letterforms that are used in everything from novels to menus to the credits that roll at the end of television shows and movies.

In an interesting paradox, most designers quickly become bored with routine and could never function in a field like accounting that is black and white, yet they have a huge attraction to beautiful items that perform functions. While most of us enjoy a menu for its promise of delightful dishes to come, the budding designer is looking at how the menu functions as a message, its white space, typeface and accompanying images. This type of interest is one of the qualifications needed for graphic designer.

The creative development and actual production of objects and things is what a graphic designer relishes. It is not enough for these individuals to simply create art for art's sake, they crave the opportunity to add beauty, form and function to everyday objects. While they are well aware of the need to create with constraints of practicality and affordability, they are always seeking to push the envelope.

For many the pathway to a graphic design career may begin early in life under the guidance and tutelage of high school art teachers and art studio lessons. For many others however, the pathway to a career in this challenging field gets it start from exploring online design examples and looking into online education opportunities. Online graphic design education fits well into the personalities of those who seek a different pathway to improve and beautify ever day life.
